Formation Fridays: Journeying with Jesus
“While they were discussing these things, Jesus himself arrived and joined them on their journey… …weren’t our hearts on fire when he spoke to us along the road and when he explained the scriptures for us?” (Luke 24:13-49)
As two of Jesus’ followers traveled from Jerusalem to Emmaus one afternoon, walking and talking about the latest events of Jesus’ death and empty tomb, Jesus joined them. Although, they didn’t recognize him until he revealed himself later that evening at dinner. As they reflect on the day, one of the followers notices how his heart was “on fire”.
I don’t think this was heartburn, but a physical, visceral, bodily recognition of Christ’s presence. Like a warm blanket or embrace on a cold, dark, and vulnerable day. That moment when your heart profoundly connects with a friend.
I love that Jesus didn’t just reveal himself first, but chose to join them, in relationship and friendship, right where they were at in the mystery of the past few conflicting days.
I invite you to notice where Christ is journeying with you, wherever you are at. In your sadness, conflict, and questioning, or in your celebration and amazement when you recognize Christ has been with you all along.
He is risen! He is risen indeed!
